Our People

Marshman Foundation still has the oversight of the original founder, Peter Marshman OAM. In recent years the program content has been scrutinised and adapted by psychologists and educators to ensure its consistency with the evidence base and its currency in meeting contemporary needs of its audiences. Independent audits have been conducted for psychological safety, cultural and general accessibility.

Peter Marshman

Peter Marshman OAM

Founder

A successful business leader turned social entrepreneur, Peter Marshman is passionate about changing young people’s futures for the better. After running several prominent South Australian businesses including Modern Home Improvements and Burns for Blinds, Peter turned his attention to the training programs he had previously used to upskill his staff; asking himself, what if young people were given the opportunity to build their confidence and resilience, and become personal leaders in their own lives?

In 1997, Peter Marshman founded South Australian non-profit Youth Opportunities, with the aim to improve wellbeing, enterprise skills and resilience for young people experiencing adversity or disadvantage.

Peter’s work with Youth Opportunities has seen him recognised both on a state and national level including being awarded an OAM, and winning the 2007 Rotary Paul Farris Fellow award and the 2010 South Australian of the Year Award in the community sector.

Since its inception, Youth Opportunities has now engaged over 14,000 young South Australians, positively impacting not only their lives, but their families and communities. Peter believes so strongly in the difference that Personal Leadership makes to young people and it is his kind, generous and passionate belief that has enabled our programs to change so many lives.
